Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. To fear the Lord really doesn't mean to be scared. Fear in this context means to respect His awesome power and presence. Remember we're talking about God here, not some squirrel or chimpanzee. This is the Almighty Creator of the Universe! Remember that the consequence of sin against God is death. He will accept us if we repent of our sins and trust Jesus to save us. Only Jesus took the full wrath of God on himself for the sins of the whole world and no one else. Jesus is the son of God in whom the Father is well pleased. When Jesus said "It is finished" on the cross, he did it all. He had fulfilled the prophecies concerning his life and death. When he was resurrected from the grave he defeated death. Now, we also can have eternal life with God in Heaven. But you must repent and trust Jesus to save you. Otherwise you will not be able to stand in the holy presence of God and face his judgment for every sin you have committed against His righteousness.

No one makes you do anything. Yes, Jesus is a teacher, but he is also King and Lord over all. Fearing God means honoring him and holding steadfast in his ways. He created all things to begin with and if you don't fear the power he has over your life, you need a reality check.

Its the same type of relationship as with the father of a household. You may love your father unconditionally but you should also respect him and know that he is your creator and provider. The fear of the Lord should come out of respect and knowledge that ultimately he has authority over your life.

John 3:16
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[g]”

The word "fear" has changed meaning over the last few decades. Fear in the biblical sense means "respect." Thats what it says now in many translations.

I know what you are implying, but Jesus never ever did this, but some controlling Christians have, I do not fear God, but I am in total awe of Him, who is merciful and full of compassion.

You should reverence Him. He sits on the right hand of the Father, as an intercessor on your behalf, to the One who made you. The same One that's full of love and grace, will be the same One who judges you in the end. Why wouldn't you reverence Him?

I think you answered you own question. Fearing God is your own choice. You can choose to have a different view, or relationship with your faith.

As others have stated here, to fear God as a believer, means to have reverence...respect, awe, and love for God. However, for unbelievers, they certainly should have fear of God, because the wrath of God will be a fury that no man could bear... Jesus told us to worship his Father...Matthew 4:10.God sent Jesus here to bear witness to the truth, not to bear false witness. We should learn from Jesus through God's Word, the Bible. When we search the scriptures, we should do it as we would seek for hidden treasure (Proverbs chapter 2) because we need to keep on making sure of what is true and what has been falsely passed down as doctrines of man. 2Timothy 3:16 and 17 says: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." Also in 2 Timothy 4:2-5 it says: "Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
Make absolutely sure of what you are learning, that it has not been based on false assumptions, but search the scriptures and let the reasonableness of your intellectual capacity help you to discern the truth form the lies that have been portrayed by the main stream religions of this worldly system of things. This worldly system of things is ruled by Satan and he loves it when people are fooled by false teachings, it makes it very easy for him to keep hold of you, but don't let yourself be deceived by him, Question your beliefs closely and use the Bible for confirmation. Ask yourself questions and reason on it...meditate on God's word deeply, pray for understanding, knowledge, discernment and wisdom...ask and you will recieve.Don't blindly believe something just because it is what has been passed down to you, but open your eyes to what the Bible really teaches. If something contradicts something, look for other scritptures that will shed light on its deeper meaning. Jesus has opened up the way for us to be able to come to the Father, so that we can worship him. That is why we have to pray in the name of Jesus, but we pray to the Father, just as Jesus also prayed to his Father.

Obeying and honoring is showing respect for God. When you say Fear in God you are actually meaning that one will or should honor and obey (respect) God with love.
If you fear God you love Him.
You don't fear God like being scared of him like a monster. You respect him knowing what He can and will do.
