its always best to get the vitamins from food, but most of us do not eat like we should. thats what multivitamins are for, to supplement, not replace. multivitamins will perform better and be absorbed better by our bodies if we are eating well also. yes they work, but its not like you can eat bread and water + a multivitamin everyday and think you are "healthy"...the vitamins will not absorb if you dont eat right too.

If you want to live healthy you should start your day with a good combination of what you feel ,you need! Vitamins and supplements.
Eating well might also give you vitamins but you can't be sure of getting a balance!
Heat will cause some vitamins to deteriorate so that it is useless!
Taking a good balance of vitamins will make you feel better partly, because of the Placebo effect (you know you will feel better and your brain will respond) and it really does make everthing better!
Also , increase the amount of liquid that you normally drink per day and do an exercise in the morning. It can be lite at first , you will expand the exercise as you feel better!

The ideal is to get it all from food, but our food is not grown to maintain all the vitamins we need anymore. All over the counter vitamins are not good. Some are processed in a way that we do not absorb the vitamins so they are a waste if you don't get a good brand, so do some research before you buy.

Obtaining your vitamin intake is ALWAYS more beneficial to your health, if derived from a natural food source. The only time one should need vitamins, is when you know you're not eating properly. Study the food groups. If you find you're not meeting all the recommended intake, and there's no way that you can ... then take a vitamin containing what you may be lacking.

It is better to get vitamins from food however, given the difficulty of eating all the right foods, in the right amounts, all the time, vitamin supplements are a good idea. The key is to supplement good eating with vitamins.

Obatining vitamins and minerals from food sources is the best way but if you're unable to do that for some reason then supplements are fine. A mulitvitamin-mineral formula such as Centrum works well.
I beg to differ with "marilyn's" doctor. It is scientifically & medically proven that our bodies need and benefit from both vitamins and minerals for repair, maintainenance and proper function. Perhaps she meant to say that her doctor said "supplemental" vitamins are unneccessary.

Vitamins are best gotten from food, and supplements are best eaten with a balanced diet.
The reason for supplements ("added to") is that the modern diet lacks many essestial nutrients, which are processed out of manufactured food. Supplements provides them. But there is "bioavailability," which is a measurement of how much of a supplement the body actually uses. Different types of supplements, and the way they are taken, influence this.

My doctor told me there is no scientific proof that vitamins do a darn thing for you but it wouldn't hurt to take a good multi-vitamin everyday. You get your best nutrition from food though by eating a well balanced diet. Hope this helps.

Vitamins from food are much better, but few of us eat enough variety of enough foods every single day to get them all -- so be sure to take a good quality vitamin every day, preferably with food.
