Perhaps they might have been Russian Orthodox nuns or members of one of the other branches of Eastern Christianity?

Note: the lady in the center is an abbess, hence the different style of headcovering.

Some fudamentalist Christian women wear a head covering. Some of those head coverings might look- to a Muslim- about the same as hijab, and others look completely different. A veil over the face is not a Christian tradition at all except by the bride in a wedding ceremony. Head coverings in all religious traditions are only the traditions of humans groups to distinguish themselves from other groups of humans. These things are not and have never been a commandment from God.
Christians can quote the apostle Paul and Muslims can cite hadith, but no person can show that God requires a woman to cover her head.

Not all nuns wear a traditional habit like in the movies...and masses are associated with the Catholic faith. I'm thinking they were probably Catholic nuns.

Some do because the region from which they came dictates hijab for all women, or it is just native dress which is optional for them. Also, ~I~ wore one once as part of a sociology project. I'm not Islamic or Christian, though.

Not that I know of. Maybe they were a sect of nuns that were different from catholic nuns. I don't know. I've never seen women wear those where I'm from.
