The only store I have access to buy candy has run out! So I thought this could be a good alternative to give to the kids...do you think this is a good idea? Also, can you tell me how?

Candy Corn Popcorn Balls:

If kids are helping shape these treats, make sure the marshmallow mixture is cool enough for them to handle. Store the confections in an airtight container for up to three days.

8 cups popped light butter microwave popcorn (about 1 [3-ounce] bag)
1 cup candy corn
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (10-ounce) bag marshmallows
Cooking spray

Combine popcorn and candy corn in a large bowl.

Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large saucepan over medium heat; stir in 1/4 teaspoon salt and (10-ounce) bag marshmallows. Reduce heat to low; cook for 7 minutes or until the marshmallows melt and the mixture is smooth, stirring frequently.

Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn mixture, stirring to coat well. Lightly coat hands with cooking spray; shape popcorn mixture into 20 (2-inch) balls.

Yield: 20 servings (serving size: 1 popcorn ball)

Popcorn Balls

1 C. unpopped popcorn
1 1/4 C. sugar
1/2 C. light corn syrup
3 T. butter
Pinch of salt
1/2 C. water

Cook sugar, syrup, water, butter and salt until it forms hairlike threads. Use a candy thermometer and cook to 290 degrees. Be careful.

While cooking the liquid, make popcorn -- white is best. Salt popcorn to taste. Pour syrup over popcorn and stir with a wooden spoon.

Butter hands generously to avoid being burned. Very quickly, shape popcorn balls just like you make snowballs. Wrap balls immediately in waxed paper squares. Twist end tightly to ensure freshness.

you pop some popcorn, put it in a bowl, get some syrup and put it on the popcorn but not too much. Then you roll the popcorns in balls.

Many parents won't let their kids eat food or candy that isn't prepackaged because they fear tampering and sanitation issues. There is a warning in today's paper about homemade treats and safety.

most parents tell kids not to eat anything that is not prepackaged. most likely they will throw them away. I would not waste my time in making something. but if you really want to make some, food network has recipes.
