Or

Do you think there are good people and they adopt a philosophy that embraces kindness/generosity/honesty?

I'd have to say they develop hand in hand.

I do a kind thing for a person. They do a kind thing back. I recognize the goodness of being on both ends of kindness. So I philosophize on this, and engage in the behavior again. The results reinforce the philosophy. I begin to branch out from there. In the end, it's rather a great self-reinforcing cycle.

I genuinely believe that the two contributing factors are genetics, and how the mother and father socially interacts with the child from the time they are born, some researchers say this starts in the womb. I work with children, and every child is different socially. Some are giving, some will not share, some hit and do not want to be touched, some do not hit and are loving. I believe that the philosophy/theology/doctrine is something that does play a very strong role in the persons life. That is why we need to be-careful and not get involved with Zealots who preach outlandish religions as this can be destructive as well.

A bit of both... I mean if i change my beliefs to become a fundamental christian i will soon be telling everyone they will go to hell etc. and if i change my beliefs to Buddhism I will constantly be meditating and spreading peace, but since my personality is mischievous I would probably not be the 'best' Buddhist or christian even if i do adopt the faith and spend my whole life practicing it. I will still just be me when you strip me of my philosophy and religion.

People seek out what they need. No one and nothing has ever imposed true goodness on a human. They do that to themselves.
