Most other earth tones will go well with brown, but think about some touches of color too or it'll be boring. Orange, yellow, ochers, siennas, white, turquoise, burgundy will all go nicely, as will gold. Dark brown walls can easily be oppressive so bear that in mind and consider how light the room is during the day and whether brown shrinks the room at night.

Brown contains a wide range of colour which mean they help balance other colours by bringing them all together as an anchor.

Some good colour schemes are:

Brown, Cream, Navy Blue = nautical
Brown Cream, small amounts of Orange = retro
Brown, Cream Sky Blue and tiny accents of pink = fresh contemporary
Brown, White and Lime green = zesty contemporary

Try this book for great colour combo's

Creams, tans, light blue, light pink or sage. We just did our spare room/office, soon to be baby room in 3- 29" horizontal stripes...the top being like a milk chocolate, the middle being darker, then bottom being dark chocolate...it looks great! So if you're painting...don't let not being able to find coordinating colors stop you...brown is in...mix it with almost anything...for a retro look try orange or marroon!

Dark brown, like chocolate? I would go with a light blue or pink if you are trying for a contemporory feel. Or if you want more modern go with light brown and medium brown, more monochromatic. Traditional would be red or navy.

I've successfully used varied shades of blue and white with dark brown. Or you can use beiges and tans, or even orange.
