Excessive is bad, because it's harsh on the gums. As long as you use a soft brush you can safely brush 3 times a day.
What you need to do is brush smarter, not harder, make sure to floss and use a good mouthwash (Listerine or better yet, Biotene).

Excessive brushing? Maybe it's when you brush too hard! But you may as well consider having a calcium diet will for stronger gums and Crest White Strips sample with hydrogen peroxide for whiter teeth. I learned all about this product by browsing this site http://www.upkb.com/crestwhitestrips.php

My ex's brother wore the enamel off of his teeth from excessive brushing. I know it's anecdotal... but it's true. He was using a hard toothbrush, also.
