It already happened a thousand years ago. The rapture, the apocalypse, 1/4 of the population killed by plague, war and violence and death like we cannot imagine, the eruption of Krakatoa and the subsequent world wide famine, the four horsemen complete with full soundtrack and cheesy hollywood special effects.
Just as predicted in the revelation of st John the divine.
We are the descendants of what was left behind, the ones that nobody wanted to bother with.
Explains a lot doesn't it?
