Depending on what your correcting. If you are correcting a master thesis then yes it is absolutely OK to correct someones spelling mistakes or even punctuation. If you are talking about an email then it really isn't all that necessary. I mean if you want to get technical, you used the word I three or four times in your question and never capitalized it. Is it really that important.

There is a right and wrong way to spell a word.
I was taught using phonetics so some times my words are spelled the wrong way based on sounds. But be careful not to draw conclusions from a person's spelling... Its a measure of memory not of intelligence. I hate it when people correct my spelling in some sort of effort to establish an intellectual edge on me... it happens a lot to me, I'm a biochemical engineering student and people in my major are so competitive and constantly looking for ways to put you down. You can really come off as a jerk by going out of your way to point out other's flaws.

I always correct spelling; it will always be a help, not a hindrance. Say, how can you correct spelling and not grammar? I am somewhat of a pain in the **** when it comes to pronunciation and the proper use of words in context.
It's all in the delivery of your correction. Only defensive people will answer, "WHAT EVER....."

It depends on WHO's spelling you are correcting. To correct a stranger is rude.
Think of it this way: would you tell that person if their socks didn't match or their underwear was hanging out?
If you are still not sure, try suggesting they use spell check.

On Yahoo! Questions and Answers you'd be correcting spelling all day long. Just let it go.

It really depends on what your critiquing, and how often they make spelling mistakes. I have this one friend that makes them all the time, and I think he does them on purpose just to tick me off! I correct him all the time! It really is annoying, let me tell you. But I mean, if that person makes one mistake every once and awhile, I don't think it's anything to get uptight about. No one is perfect.

That is dependent on where you did the correction. The manner in which you did and the type of person that you are dealing with.
I do not think that it is wrong though.

I always appreciate a correction from someone, and I am a good speller, but some people find it offensive. It seems that they should appreciate the help.

It is according to the job you do! What kind of job does you have that would even allow you to read things so that you notice the incorrect spelling? It's according to your job.
