They use to think every time you sneezed that you shot out demons and evil spirits, and so it comes from there.

All the things about the plague sounds good. I was told that when you sneeze, your heart misbeats, your sneeze makes your heart skip a beat. The bless you is to get it started again.
Old wives tail I'm sure, but it sounds as good as anything else

My Mom always told us it is because when you sneeze everything stops in your body for a second and if it continued that way you could die, so when you sneezed although it is totally safe, your body came close to dying, sort of. So you need a blessing! God Bless You!

A long time ago. It used to be known that you die because you don't have a soul or spirit anymore. When you are born, you start out with a full spirit. But every time you sneeze, you let a little bit of your spirit out. SO they said bless you because it was like you are getting nearer to your death.
Or something close/similar to that. There are many variations to this.

It comes from the days of the plague in europe. A sneeze was often the first sign of the plague which was fatal. People said bless you to the sneezer because it was assumed they had the plague.

i heard it first started during the plagues, people were dying left and right, and apparently they thought that a sneeze was the first symptom, so they said bless you because they were about to die

It goes back to the plague days of 14 - 1600's.
One of the first signs of plague was to sneeze which would bring a blessing from anyone nearby as "bless you."
The first visual sign was reddish coloured rings on the skin.
The old nursery rhyme "Ring-a ring-o-roses" is about this.
A pocket of posies (sweet smelling flowers) was supposed to ward off plague.
"Atishoo! Atishoo! - we all fall down." ie dead
The second verse is about death (ashes on the water) and burial followed by (we all jump up) resurrection.

That is a good question!!!!!! I have asked the same question. I was told that when you sneeze you get rid of some kind of germ or something that prevent you from being sick , something to that affect and....I forgot! I still don't say it. It just don't make sense to me. To each it's own!!!!!!!!!!!!

because people used to think that when you sneezed it was your soul trying to escape and saying "God Bless you" kept it in.
