The date element of car registrations in England, Scotland and Wales currently change twice a year, on 1st March and 1st September. Although Northern Ireland is part of the UK, its registrations do not include a date element.

The current registrations are "56". This started on 1st September 2006, and will run until 28th February 2007. On 1st March 2007 "07" registrations will start, followed by "57" registrations on 1st September 2007.
