Do you think that people should have to learn the language of the country they are living in? I mean for example if you moved to a new country to live...should the country cater to your needs...or should you take some personal responsibility and learn the language yourself?

Learn the language. I think people should, and it would actually benefit them. It can be really tiring to never udnerstand a word of what's being said around you (even if sometimes you wish you wouldn't understand.

I was born in the UK, but moved to France just over nine years ago...when I arrived here, I knew about ten words in French...with the aid of a good dictionary, a phrase book, and some brilliant neighbours (the most patient, helpful, and understanding people I've ever known)...I can now get along without any problems...Of course we should learn the language of the country we choose to live in...what's the alternative? is everyone from that country supposed to learn our language just to please us?..;I've met a number of idiotic, ignorant morons that think so...strangely, they don't stay here long.

Of course you should learn the language, both as a convenience to yourself and as a sign of respect to others. But you shouldn't "have to" do it because that implies force. Peer pressure should be the only force, Trouble is, some people obviously don't give a damn what others think.

If you expect to function that society how can you not learn the language. There is a hispanic guy at my work and he had to bring an interpreter (sister I think) to a union meeting. What's up with that?
