I receaved a ticket for 39 in a 20mph school zone. This violation occured in Ohio where the sign is painted on the road. This is as far as I know the legal boundry of the zone. There are also "pole" signs that give you the restricted speed and hours. I moved into the area 5 months ago and never drove down that road until that day.(becasue of heavy traffic on my normal route to work) The pole sign is located between 150 - 200' inside the marked road sign in both directions. I may just be missing something here but that just does not seem right. The ticket was written at 7:45am and the restricted hours were 7am to 8am. How is one to know what the restricted hours are for the school zone if they are posted within the zone and it is too late to react? I do know that the speed limit is 20mph but I thought I had another 15mins before it was in affect. It turns out,on this alternate route there are other schools that have the same setup for the signs.(those restricted hours are 8am to 9am

A lot depends on how far inside the road-marked zone you were. If you were just inside and slowing down, you have a case. If you were tonking it past the school gates, it sounds as if you should be paying up.

I never heard of restricted hours for a school zone. It was pretty much left up to the discretion of the officer. Lets face it...i wouldn't be handing out tickets on a Saturday morning at 7:45AM in a school zone.
The road markings may just be a "pre-cursor" to advise you that the zone is ahead. In fact...does it say "ahead" in the lettering? The posted signs themselves would deliniate the zone.
In New England road markings are usually avoided (with the exception of painted crosswalks) because the snow obscures the markings. Plus people have a tendency to look at the lettering painted on the road and then glace up and notice the truck 100 feet in front of you has stopped in the road...leaving you 3.1 seconds to hit the brakes.
You may want to contact the local police department and talk to their signs and markings unit. Unless its on a state road, then you'd have to contact their unit that does signs and painting.
Of course, the final question is this. Was there a posted 20mph sign on the street before the zone anyway? If so...you're case may be done before you start.

Again, it all depends on what the state laws are where you live. Here in NC they only have to have it painted on the road that it is a school zone and what time it is in effect, that's it. All other signs are up to the discretion of the school. You might be able to get out of this ticket this time, because of you being new to the area but it won't fly twice.

Bummer...live and learn.

Show up for court and plead your case. In the meantime, scope out the schools in your area and the related times and boundaries. Where I live, the newspaper prints all that information, so at least it is out there. And each of the schools send paperwork home to the parents.
