Typically in any relationship there is a dominant and a submissive. Now, by this I mean there is usually one person more in control or makes the decisions more so than the other. When you get two very independent people of the same level it can tend to cause fighting and a lot of trouble. People naturally gravitate to a person that compliments them or mate up with a person that has strengths to even out their weaknesses. This is not to say that the submissive does not have a mind of their own or follows any and all instructions. They just tend to defer to the more dominant person. You can have the same two people be the dominant in certain areas of one’s relationship though. Perhaps the man is more in control about the money by paying the bills, disciplining the children, etc., but perhaps in the bedroom the woman is more in control or when it comes to household chores she is the one to delegate how they should be done.
I would say who is head of household just depends on the people in the household. These days, it is much more common for it be a shared duty. I would say the more dominant personality tends to be the head of household, regardless of their gender.

Why should there be a head or a tail in a family. Each one is responsible. All are important. Even the servant maid sometimes comes out with a good suggestion. So you just can't have anyone fixed for the job. Running a family is a joint venture. Open discussions should be held during dinner time & amicable solutions should be found. Then it is going to be a happy family.

In a normal family, it is the male who is considered legally the head of the household. However with our changing social structure, it can be either the father or mother, as far as the decision making process goes. On major decisions it should be an equitable agreement among both parents. In a dysfunctional family, it is usually the most mature of the people involved.

This got me to thinking about men and women ,it's a good question. I can only answer from my observation of the sexes . I read an article once that said if a man walks through the mall with a bouquet of flowers, that all the females in the mall will look at him. This proved to be true when one day i was in the store, and beyond a few people in front of me was a man holding flowers.Though that was several months ago, I still remember what he looks like . Women have their " things" that turn them on . And for men, it's leadership . When you tell a man what a good job he did on whatever it is , it inspires him . And it turns him on . That's like handing flowers to a woman . Or a diamond ring ( whatever she likes ) . And a wise woman will never let him know how much rule she really has ; )

there shouldn't be a head in the family, they should be a couple sharing everything- and this includes responsibilities and decision- making.
but it depends on the type of family- extended, nuclear or what?

The one that's best to evaluate situations and make decisions.
In my case that's my wife. I tend to be more impulsive and she tends to sit back and think things through. I smart enough to see that so we usually go with what she decides is best because she right most of the time.
