The black perm marker didn't run all over. -- only enough to make me sick !! Would it help if we sprayed it with a super hold hair spray before we varnished the rest? These are Christmas presents. Thanks

The marker ran because of a chemical reaction to the varnish. Maybe hair spray would work. You would need to apply something to shield the marker from the varnish, use something other than varnish (like shellac) or use a different marker. (test the marker on a scrap and spray or apply finsih to scheck for steadfastness. Good luck

If the varnish ran, you probably put on too much varnish at one time. Use a poly urthan brush and put on a light coating. Keep the board flat also. Standing the board vertical before it dries will cause the runs. Also, if the black permanent marker ran (can't exactly tell from your wording), you may want to wait a bit for the permanent marker to fully dry before you varnish it or use black paint instead. There are paint markers you can use instead of a permanent marker.
