I want to go all out with pretty decorations, we don't have a fireplace, but I want one that can just plug in. How do I go about keeping xmas safe around my kids and looking pretty at the same time.

You can get fake fireplaces all over, electric ones, and may be able to find a cheaper, used one in your local classifieds. Also, to keep things safe, keep decorations up higher - above doorways and windows, things like that. Don't use a lot of glass decor, use papery things and lights and just be sure to check all electrical connections often and to turn them off at night.

interestingly, I think you meant homey....homely means ugly... although, many xmas decorations are rather unattractive and gawdy.
