The marines are a kill and conquer platform for the Department of Defense. The army goes in, rebuilds, reorgnzies, and restructures the inner workings of the country. The navy secures the coastal waters and waterways within countrys and the air force patrols the skies.

The armies job is to destroy all enemy land forces it comes up against. The army doesn't have planes except small utility planes. It does however have the most helocopters of any branch. The marines job is to be a rapid reaction force that specializes in amphibious warfare thay can also do the army role in a pinch which is what is happening in Iraq now. The marines use navy approved aircraft as the marine planes and helocopters operate on navy ships and so to simplify parts and keep costs down the marines use navy planes. The air force's job is command of the sky they use planes that are built to take on all comers from land bases and there planes are lighter and structurally weaker than navy planes as they don't land on carriers which is very violent so navy planes have stronger frames these cost wieght and that cost speed and range so air force planes tend to be faster than there navy counter parts. The air force also operates the big bombers and missile silos that serve as a nuclear deterent to other countries. The navy job is command of the seas and to operate ballistic missile subs to guarantee that any 1st strike on the US can be answered as it very hard to find these subs never mind sink them all at the same time. The navies planes operate mainly from carriers there are some shore based planes which do long range patrol hunting for subs. The carrier planes are designed to defend the fleet from attack and support the marines on shore. I hope this was helpful.

The Army use to have it's own air Corps. (The US Army Air Corps) which broke away and became our Air Force. In 1991, the Army turned over it's A-10 to the Air Force and now no longer have any fix-winged aircraft. Only rotary wing.

I cannot accurately speak for the Navy and Marines. So I will not attempt to.

Actually, it isn't a stupid question. Many people don't understand the reasoning for this. But, I will provide you with an over simplified explaination.

All cars have wheels, all cars must have tires. But few if any car makers, make tires. ;) Confused yet?

The Army, needs air supports from time to time. So they have helos and planes to provide this support. They target ground control, and take "reports" from the Air Force (not command) while in the air.

The Air Foce uses many of their planes for mission specific runs...IE Bombing. They target "air" control, providing logistics to Navy and Army also, while taking care of their individual missions.

You must have 2 command and control centers for these 2, otherwise you would overtax your man power. All branches will provide support for each other, at any time they are asked, afterall they are on the same team.

A football team only needs 11 players.....yet they use 22. Offense and defense.

they all have different basic missions. The marines typically come through and blow everything up, while the army tends to stay longer. The army cannot fly fixed-wing aircraft into combat, whereas the navy can. The navy owns the sea.

Yes all branches have some what the saml thing, planes, weapons, ships etc. But they are used for different missions that each branch has. The Army has a big supply ship that they use to transport supplies to the troops, and they have planes, but they are not like the big planes the Air Force has to do their missions, they are smaller planes to transport people to differnt places, they are small aircraft usually only for a few people. The equipment that each branch has is to complete their missions assigned to them.

Navy= sea -majority boats, with planes and helicopters on board the boats, but these aircraft are used for marine operations

Army=Land- tanks, artillery etc. With helo's for transport. They do the land battles.

USMC= amphibious warfare- operate from the navy (use their boats) has planes for air support (helping the troops on the ground) has helo's for transport. +artillery and tanks, but the force is a lot smaller and not originally intended for long-term deployment.

Air force- All aircraft (planes)
