My mother has been complaining that her left shoulder hurts, usually when she moves it. She also says that every once in a while her fingers will go numb. She thinks she has a pinched nerve but my aunt says it could be bursitis. I can't get her to go to the doctor. Should I be too worried?

The concern with pain and numbness in an arm/shoulder, especially on the left, is that it could be related to a heart problem. Coronary artery disease can and does manifest as left arm and shoulder pain, and can be an ominous sign of impending heart attack or heart failure. HOWEVER, the fact that she's experiencing this pain "when she moves it" lessens that possibility. It is more likely to be related to nerve compression, arthritis, joint degeneration, and/or bursal disease. Vascular insufficiencies can also cause similar symptoms, but again, it wouldn't be limited to "with movement". The safest option is to have a doctor work it up, and rule out the more serious problems. I guarantee you that if she came to the ER with the symptoms, they WOULD do an EKG and make sure it isn't cardiac related. Then, they would investigate joint/nerve problems next, regardless of what their first impressions were.

Try to apply some ointment. Tie a towel tightly around the joint of the arm. Do some light exercises like moving hand in circular motion, etc. Tell her to put her hand straight in upward direction for sometime while sleeping. Consentrate on taking healthy diet. If none of the above works then you must see the doctor.
