I love to travel, and mostly do it solo - within the US and internationally. It depends on your personality, if you enjoy being alone sometimes or if you will feel lonely. Personally, I enjoy times of solitude, then other times try to meet people and be social.

It's true that you need to be careful and aware of your surroundings, especially if you're female, stay in well-lit areas and near people. However, you can be robbed at home too, so don't be fearful while you're traveling either.

The best way to make a friend is to be a friend. Smile at people, ask questions about the city or weather or about their customs; generally people are happy to help a traveler and you might make some nice friends along the way. Enjoy your trip!

Which ever city you are visiting , find the local commerce center and ask for information about travelers who need people to translate for them. Even if you don't need a translator, they will be friendly enough to answer some of your quesitons and help you find places to go. Also, if you are camping, it is really easy to make friends with the campers. They are very friendly folks. These days you cannot be to careful, it is a dangerous world out there and it is best to carry a Pepper Spray with you. Take a self defense course too. Always be aware of what is going on around you. I used to travel alone all the time. Now , I have no money for it , also I have 7 year old son in school, so no travel right now for me. I always was able to talk to people, most are friendly. Don' t worry to much about making friends, worry more about keeping safe! Best of Luck to you!

I often, almost always, travel solo. I find it easier than trying to coordinate with other's likes, dislikes, preferences along the way.

Meeting others is usually easy if one stays in a youth hostel. Try also the local pub and find the "locals" table. Explain that you are traveling through the area and would like to see some things of interest. I'll bet someone will help you and maybe even let you follow them to interesting places.

Safety is a concern, especially for women. Let others know where you intend to be and try to arrange phone calls, etc to let them know you are safe. Don't ever go someplace without an escape route.

Good luck!!

I almost always used to travel alone. It's great - to get away from everyone you know, and to totally immerse yourself in the place you are visiting. I always met people along the way.

Nowadays I'd rather travel with someone, or better yet stay home! I've been cured of the travel bug, for now. I didn't worry about safety much, but I always tried to learn about the area first and be aware of my surroundings.

Maybe traveling with a group who gets together for the purpose of the trip is the best of both worlds.

Good luck!

Hi, I have travel solo before.
I go solo by joining a tour group.
Can make friends , on the plane/bus going to the country of visit.
At the local place of visit, try talking to any person, sales staff, security guards, people shopping in the malls, etc.
AS for safety, just avoid lonely place, return to hotels early, don't keep late nights, unless with the people you have met.
When asking for directions to a certain place, try asking people from the shops, sales staff.. they are more likely to tell you, and not likely to cheat you.
Also try the shopping malls security guards.
If you ask people on the streets, they can help you, than con you.
hope you can try it, and wishing you a happy solo trip

i have traveled by myself many times, mostly on tours or cruises, it is very easy to make friends, as long as you are not shy. safety is always an issue, but traveling in a group makes it much safer.
