Usually it means there was trauma to the toenail or maybe a disease - like a fungus. If you have stubbed your toenail or something in the last few months, it could be that to have caused your toenail to fall off.

Good question. It's happened to me twice. It was the toe next to my big toe - once on each foot. That toe protrudes just a bit further than my big toe. There was no pain. I had been doing quite a bit of walking on the occassions that it happened.

I just saw a marathoner on TV a couple of days ago and she mentioned losing her toenails. I got the impression it's common and caused by ill fitting shoes.

My shoes seemed to fit, but who knows.

You have fungus in your toenails, the best OTC treatment is Lamisil. You may also try vapor rub as an alternative...it works...I swear by it, and so do other doctors.

See a doctor. Sounds like fungus has taken over. Once it sets up shop it can take months of anti-fungal meds to get rid of it. Start now and you will be in those sandals by next summer!

It means that you either have a fungus growing in it, you hit it really hard with something, you had frostbite, or you injured it in some way. You should go see your doctor!
