I gave notice on 8/21 and told the office I would be gone by 9/7. Since rent was due on 9/1 (past due after 9/5) they told me to just wait until 9/7 and get a final bill before I made a payment. I paid via their online system on 9/7. That day, they mailed me a final statement, which had already been paid. Last week, I received a call from a collection agency regarding my past due rent. I explained it had been paid online, I even had the confirmation email and print out. The office claimed they never received it and didn't have my contact info to call/mail me about not receiving it. This was a blatant lie. First, they mailed my final billing statement to my new address that I had provided. Secondly, the statement sent to the collection agency had all of my contact info on it (home ph, work, cell, addy). They reported me delinquent just SIX DAYS after they mailed my final bill, even though it had been paid. My credit score dropped 100pts! The online co. said no way they didn't get notice

Debts are not reported until they are 30 days past duie.

It sounds like since they misplaced your payment info, they recorded it as late after that 30 day period.

Simple problem to fix....First send the collection agent a dispute letter and demand to validate the debt, Send them a copy of any documentation you have lthat it was paid. DO IT TODAY! And send it by certified mail.

Also send a letter to each of the collection bureaus and dispute any listing that was placed. Get your credit report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com

Read the Fair Debt Collections Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Acts. Know your rights.

If you do these things...and if you are certain you have the payment proof....and they still do not remove this from your credit reports.......pretend you just won the lottery!

File a small claims suit against the collection agency and credit bureau for posting unvalidated info to your credit report, and you can win $1000 from each of them.
