I got my daughter this kitten. Turns out the poor thing wasn't even weaned, so he is about 5 weeks old. He poops and pees all over the house, on beds, rugs, anything soft. I lock him in the storage room alot, cause that's where the litter box is and he uses it then. I put him in the litter box lots and he runs out. My older cat uses the litter box and the little guy watches and goes in with him...

Putting litter boxes all over the house is not an option. I am pregnant, and need this stuff contained to a place I clean it up with gloves and a mask, and not be stepping on it.

After you have your cat using the litter box you can toilet train it with CitiKitty's cat toilet training kit.

Good luck with the baby!

If hes going to the bathroom in the house I'm guessing your the one cleaning it up. Your right, you shouldn't be around the messes or the litter box. I would keep him in the storage room with the litter box for a week or so then let him out and see how he does. Eventually he'll get it. He's just young. And no I don't think he'll be traumatized by being left alone. Check on him throughout the day and let him out to eat. He'll be fine.

Everytime he goes somewhere other than the litter box, pick up the poop and put it in the litter box and then take the cat and put him in the litter box with the fresh poop. If the other cat uses the same box, that may be the problem. Get another box.

the kitten ultimately should have been taken back to where she got it from... becuase I doubt it was vaccinated in the first place... thus exposing you and your current cat to possible health risks. (especially if you are pregant you should NEVER bring home an unvaccinated cat)
plus to teach your daughter a lesson about bringing home pets without proper permission from you...
anyhow...
ok
he needs to be kept in the small room with a litter box for 2-3 weeks more.. then let out durring day but confined to the room again at night for another 2-3 weeks
a kitten this young cannot find his way in a large house to the litter box
a rule of thumb is 1 litter box per cat and ideally 1 extra in another location
the kitten will need to be on Kitten food so you must seperate him at feeding times anyhow as adult food is bad for him (not enough fat for brain development) and kitten food is bad for an adult (too much fat)

have him dewormed and check his ears for ear mites - get him vaccianted too...or take him to the SPCA so he can be adopted to a home that is more suited...
free kittens are free for a reason - if he was from a farm it will be harder to fully train him properly

Keep his food picked up so that the kitten has set eating times - after he eats put him in the litter box and keep putting him back in till he uses it, most kittens have to potty with in a few minutes of eating you might also try to give him his own box until he is trained once he is trained all the way you can leave food down all the time. good luck and congrats on the new baby !

First make sure the litter box is very clean. Cats don't like a used litter box, especially if it wasn't them that used it.
Next you have to acclimate him to the box. Putting him in is the first step, but once you have him in there physically take his paw and scratch the litter with it. He will get the idea quickly.
If he is still going outside the box he may have a medical issue. If you haven't already, bring him to your vet to have him checked for any problems.
I hope this issue resolves itself quickly for you. Good luck with it and your pregnancy! (Congrats!)
