is because God wants us to love him as we love our children? Think about it, you would not want your child to call someone else father......when a child does wrong you must discipline them even if it hurts........kind of an answer of why bad things happen in the world, God gave us free will. to do good or bad. and how do we know the tough times we go through are really God testing our faith?

I think the bond between a child and parent is in very many ways like the bond between the person and God.

You can see it 2 ways: We can love God like a parent loves their child. Or we can love God like a child loves their parent. Both ways are necessary in my opinion. Just as you would care deeply for a child and never want the child to be hurt or suffer, we should care for our relationship with God this way.

I'm sorry to say this to you, but I think you have it all wrong. I appreciate that you believe that your image of a "tough love" God is of a good God. But I think that the God of the Old Testament is not a noble God. If there really was such a God, the way he treated his "chosen people" was horrible. And now he has decided to essentially disappear, leaving us only with a book that that is supposedly his word, but is full of contradictions and "laws" instructing us to do all sorts of horrible things. Any God that ever condoned the laws of Leviticus and Deuteronomy is not a wise, just, and all-loving God. Furthermore, you believe that this God is going to damn me to hell for all eternity, simply because the rational mind I have causes me to believe that the best explanation for him is that he is a myth that hasn't yet faded away. If this horrible myth is somehow true, and I am to be punished despite living a good and decent life in which I am loving and kind towards my family and neighbors, then all I can say is that your God is insane.

If this is so, how do you answer the fact that some parents lack any ability for empathy and altruism, even towards their own children?

Free will is an illusion, this fact has been demonstrated many times on these boards. So if the free will hypothesis does not apply, then how do you justify evil with the deific hypothesis?

I didn't "get it" until I had children. What I mean by that is the parent/child relationship that we have with God.

We, as children of God, need to fully rely on God, our Father, to care for us--just like our children rely completely on us to care for them. They do not worry about things, they just trust that we will provide for them--and we should put our complete faith in God's plan for us.

As the Father, God, loves us unconditionally. When we "misbehave", God is hurt, but He still loves us and is quick to forgive us--just like we forgive our children. We love our children so much that it hurts us when they hurt. God wants us to come to Him with our tears so that he can mend our broken hearts--just like we hold and comfort our children to take away their tears.

So let's say your child didn't believe yours was the last word on any and all things. Because of this you would send the kid to be tortured by pain forever. Nice going .... Dad.

And by the way, with that kind of "love", who needs hate?

It's human extinct to love our children as a genetic program. Unfortunately, for an increasing number, people's selfishness seems to conquer their genetic expression.

Blessed be

the Love of the christian God can be compared to the way an abusive parent loves his child. try reading the OT before you make a total *** of yourself. http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com

I whould never treat my child the way Jehovah did. He murdered Jesus and he destroyed another child of his just because he can.

I think it's the other way around. We come into the world to convince ourselves that we're bodies (born from other bodies, dependent on other bodies). And then we make god into that very image. When someone like Jesus comes along and tells us otherwise, we dramatically change his message and either literally or metaphorically kill him.

Think about a species that didn't love its children, it wouldn't last very long.
