In the 1980s a major concern was that fridges and freezers used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which were destroying the ozone layer but the use of CFCs was phased out by 2000 under the Montreal Protocol. Some of the substitutes for CFCs, notably HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) and HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), a re powerful greenhouse gases and affect the ozone layer, and are also being phased out. Greenpeace ran a campaign on this issue and promoting Greenfreeze technology which uses a mixture of propane (R290) and isobutane (R60Oa), or isobutane as a pure gas, for the refrigerant, and cyclopentane for blowing the insulation foam. According to Greenpeace, Greenfreeze has become the dominant technology in North Western Europe, since 1992, having taken over nearly 100% of the German market. A UK government report published in 2004 stated that HFC domestic refrigerators represented 3% of the UK market; these are mainly large American refrigerators. However it is possible that some of the cheaper fridges and freezers may use HFCs. When buying a new fridge or freezer find out what refrigerant is used. If you need a freezer as well as a fridge, bear in mind that Frost Free freezers use more energy than manually defrosted ones.
Ethical Consumer's online shoppers' guide has an informative article on fridges and freezers, published in early 2005. Their 'ethiscore' rates companies on ethical criteria covering environment, sustainability, animals, people and politics, based on recent research.

Callie, what is the matter with you asking a question on Q&A that might affect your life and the health of the people living with you? This is first a question for a medical doctor, and then, or at the same time, public health officials. Do not delay. ADDITIONAL: You are going to risk your health because you "cannot get a detector tonight". Well open the windows and go check into a hotel. I think you are a troll, and you get tired because the bed is in your room, right??

Yes, they emit greenhouse gas which depletes the ozone layer.olden day fridges use CFC so the emission was high.In earlier days it was CFC which was used in all products like fridges,a/c,freezers, etc now all the govt in the world have vowed to lessen the emission.so if you have fridges made after 2000 it is much lesser emission and within acceptable limits.

Not normally. but if they need cleaning of the unit underneath where the cooling system is, it could be full of dust and stinking.
Remove the foods that will be spilled and have someone tilt the unit so you can vacuum it clean.
DON'T HARM ANY PARTS BY BANGING THEM ABOUT OR PRYING ANYTHING. If the unit is very dirty, you will notice it becoming more efficient, by shutting down sooner.
The compressor and other parts can get rid of the heat better.
Don't expect it to be easy.......................

The answer is no. Unless you have food spoiling inside. Open the door, if something is spoiled, you'll be smelling it for a while, due to the fact that the smell is in your nose hairs.
