My toy poodle is holding up her front leg. I don't know how she hurt it, she's an indoor dog for the most part.

When I manipulate the leg she wimpers a little when I touch (firmly) the area betweeen her paw and elbow. Otherwise not acting in pain, hopping on 3 legs when we take her potty.

Does it sound as if it is broken? How does a vet treat a broken leg? Do dogs wear casts?

The vet will likely do some x-rays to determine what is going on. If it is broken, it will need to be operated on to place a bin in it and then they just wrap it up until time for the pin to come out. Good Luck!

First of all great job on taking your little girl to the vet right away! I am not a vet, but it sounds like it could be a fracture, this can happen even if they jump off of the sofa or a chair and land wrong. Yes, dogs do wear casts. IF the leg is broken (the bones out of line) it will have to be set. If just a fracture (the bone still in line) it can be immobilized with a cast. Good luck!

Your pups skin can be irritated between the paws. Has your pup been licking the spot a lot? Could be infected. Broken....Prolly not. Unless she was stepped on by someone, but you should nknow that. Sounds like an irritated and possible infected paw. Yes, dogs do wear a casts if the leg is broken bad.

Yes dogs where casts although this depends a great deal on where the break is. The leg is it swollen from the little you wrote it does not sound to me like a break but the vet might x-ray just to rule out if he cant find anything else. If she just started limping today and there is no swelling she probably spained it.also make sure there is not something in between her toes

well my mom has a very small chiuahua and i have seen the dog do this 2 times before...1 time she hurt her self jumping down from the couch and one time she had a small splinter in her paw. smaller dogs can hurt their selves easily when getting up and down from furniture and also have softer paws than larger breeds....they have little mini steps for small dogs to get up and down easier...either way your vet will find out what the problem is......I think if it was broken she would cry and whine even when laying down......as a child I had a cat thats leg was broken from my fatherrunning it over accidentally and they put a splint on it and taped and bandaged it. I have never seen a cast before but its possible.

I have had 2 pups with the same type injury. Both of them had fallen off the back of the couch. Their legs were not broken, but were quite painful. They wore a splint for about 10 days and were good as new.

My pup broke his leg once and he screamed!! I couldn't even breathe on his leg, let alone touch it! He wore a cast for about one month...he looked like a little pirate. Your pup doesn't sound like her leg is broken...but you'll get it all straightened out at the vet...Good luck!

Yes, they put dogs in casts for broken legs. However, it's more likely that she has a serious sprain, and they will probably wrap her up. Either way, sprains and breaks are treated in animals just like they are in humans, and dogs can trip and injure themselves just like people do.

the only way to tell oif it's broken is an xray. try to keep her quiet and still until your appt time. a broken leg can be treated many different ways, from a cast to a pin or plates.
