There are plenty of cheap or free alternatives - it's more a question of are they really any good. Have been a hardcore Photoshop user for nearly 10uys now, and have just never found anything which comes even close enough not to drive me nuts with their limitations.

The closest you may find is Gimpshop (NOT to be confused with GIMP...that one is just plain rubbish). A cheap but not free option would be Xara...this is more of a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator.

Oh, and of course there is Fireworks. Though not as comprehensive as Photoshop, it is still a good application (I use this one as well because of the way it ties in with Dreamweaver - handy when mapping out images with html overlays.

Paint Shop Pro is pretty crappy though - alright for some freehand work, but never been an industry choice as lacks too many options and not as well laid out as other applications by a long shot

Ya, Corel Photoshop is a very good software.

If you can find the old jasc software. Paint Shop Pro.
it's better then photo shop to me. get PSP 7 - 9 .
10 was taken over by Corel, and in my opinion don't have a clue about PSP.
