I don't know if there is a "best brand" You just want to make sure you get a sturdy one and take proper care of it... I have one that belonged to my grandmother and it is still in excellent shape.

except you've a skillet you stumbled on at a backyard sale or inherited, "seasoning" it in all likelihood received't do a lot. old forged iron had an extremely a lot less "suitable" floor that that forged on the instantaneous, so the tiny cracks in it might particularly in basic terms suck up oils that you heated in it, which then formed a astounding non-stick floor after cooling. you want not in any respect scrub this kind of pan, they'll in basic terms wipe sparkling with a warm soapy cloth. once you've an old pan that some fool has scrubbed the seasoning off of, in basic terms smear the floor of the entire pan with olive oil, and bake the pan in a warm oven for 15-20 minutes. enable it to kick back, and repeat the approach.

I got my cast iron set from Wal-Mart as a gift in 1994. Took them a little while to get properly seasoned. I hated them for a while (don't try eggs first!), and then as I used them more, they're worth their weight in GOLD.
I reaseason mine after every use. That works great for the non-stick effect.

For new stuff, definitely go with Lodge. The cheap stuff from China can be made of really poor quality iron, as if they really didn't care what kind of scrap they melted down to make it.
The very very best cast iron cookware, however, is old stuff made by Griswold or Wagner.

I'm not sure what brand is best but look for one that's heavy and has been seasoned. I bought mine at Bi-mart for $30 but you can get them at Target, Fred Meyer, Walmart or any place like that.

Wal-Mart has very good cast iron, some come already seasoned. don't recall the brand, really doesn't made a different.
K-Mart has 2 different kinds one Martha Stewart, more expensive.
