You don't!

Just lower the side gate so he/she doesn't fall as far when climbing out and now you have to start dealing with "staying in bed" behaviors. Be firm! My first was very challenging and kept sneaking out, sometimes 10 times, but although it seemed to take forever to teach him at the time, with consistency he eventually behaved. Looking back it really didn't take that long it was just frustrating for a few weeks! You just keep putting them back, tell them it's bedtime and leave promptly. Don't give it anymore attention than that or maybe a swat on the behind.

My kids are great a bedtime!! It is important for them to develop good sleeping skills. I never allowed the toys in the crib. It then turns that area into a playtime vs. area for sleep only.

We have always had a routine and didn't stray from it.

I have seen those netting, tie on, crib canopy's. Never used one. Most kids start moving into big beds or toddler beds by 2 years anyways. Those adventurous enough to climb out probably will just watch you tie it on and then undo it for you and climb out anyways!!

It's time to get him a new bed,not a crib.Anyway the child is going to sleep in the crib just a year or two,no more.Buy him one bed as for big boys.If you are worried for falling down while sleeping, get some blankets near the one side of the bed and get the other close to the wall.
If you decide to keep the crib and leave the child sleep there, you better put some blankets or anything soft on the floor,so the child won't get hurt if falling down from the crib.

Most child development experts state that once they are old enough to crawl out of the crib at it's lowest setting then they are ready to be moved to the toddler bed. (What to Expect The Toddler Years. Available at Walmart in the baby section and/or book section)
If you feel it's absolutely not going to work yet at 18 months then consider a crib tent. It's costly but effective and is designed for your situation. Good luck, mine's 14 months old so we're right behind you on this issue! LOL!

When my daughter started doing this I got her a toddler bed and she loved it I also got her a gate to go across her bedroom door witch did not work because if they can crawl out of a crib they can crawl over a gate. I've heard of the things you can put over the cribs to pretty much cage them in but I that that was barbaric I wouldn't even do that to my dog. Have fun. Now one said parenthood was easy.

once a child is leaving the crib like that the crib needs to be retired. You now need to buy the child a baby bed. Make it a big thing for him or her. He or she will learn to stay in the bed IF he or she likes the new bed. Make it fun but be firm about it as far as when it is night time and time to sleep. Good luck!

If he is climbing out...it's time to take down the baby bed! He could really hurt himself. Take it down and get a toddler bed with side rails. He may fall off of it a couple of times, but after a night or two, he'll have it down. You will have to be consistent in making him stay in it. For a few nights, he'll probably try to get up when you put him down. Just put him back everytime and he'll learn. He's got to know that when you say it is bed time he can't get up! Good luck!

Is this is first time? or has he done it a few times...cause our son did that and it scared him and he didn't try it again for awhile...but after he was doing it several times a night..we simply put the side of the crib down..so if he falls it isn't too far...and then we got him a twin size bed (toddler beds are a waste of money!!!)~ Crawling in and out of a twin size bed is the same as them crawling out of the crib...so just do it...right?! That zipper top...a waste of money too...they just have to watch a few times before they can figure it out themselves!!! TRUST me...I have 4 children

They sell a baby canopy for the top of the crib - kinda looks like a pop up tent that is mesh and seethru - you attatch it to your crib and it zips up so tht you lil one cant get out on his own.

i posted the link below -
but maybe its time to see about getting a toddler bed ? it could be a sign that he is ready to move on to a big boy bed ;)

my boy climed out when he was 18 months. I didn't expect it. He did fall a short ways to the ground, and didn't get hurt, but it scared him a little. He's 23 months now and hasn't tried it again.'
Take the stuffed animals out because they can pile them up to get higher up the side of the crib, and those crib tents are great. Babycenter.com store has one that velcroes if you are worried about the zipper noise.

well my 13 month old boy was too big for his crib if your baby can climb out of thier crib then it is time for a toddler bed my son stays in his bed very well so it may be time to try it out ust make sure there is nothing in their room that they can hurt themselfs on and put a baby gate up in their door way. then instead of having to put your child in a play pen or something you can let them play in their room good luck
