Open any picture in photoshop. In the lower right hand corner of your screen you will see the layers pallette. Double Click the 'background' layer. A window will pop up that says 'new layer'. Click the ok button and it will create a new layer from the image. Go to file- Save- and name your PSD file. By default, it will name it whatever your pictures original name was.

You can open most image formats in photoshop and convert them into PSD, which is photoshop's native format. One easy way is to open any sort of picture format file and add a layer, or cut a part of the base/ 'background' image and paste it back. When you try and save the file, it goes to *.PSD by default
