I have to ride the subway on Halloween night from JFK airport to Grand Central at nighttime. Is this dangerous for a female? What kinds of people are on the subway? Is it safe for a female to be riding the NY subway alone at night? I have never been to NY alone and am just concerned.

Normally, I would say this ride is totally safe and you would not have any problems.

However, given that it is Halloween, you never know if there will be teenagers out looking to cause some mischief!!

If you can, take the bus from JFK into the city. It will only cost you $10 more and is usually a better option, Halloween or not! The buses run about every 20 minutes or so and take you right into midtown. They pick up at all the terminals, there are signs for ground transportation right near the baggage claim area.

If this doesn't work for you, just try and stay alert. I ride the subway alone all the time, at night, and have never had a problem. Try and stay in a subway car with lots of other people.

JFK to GranCentral. A How old you are is a factor, but assuming your coming in for the Parade, Quite Safe in my opinion. Although I detest riding into manhattan by subway, I'll be doing it also. What kind of people on the subway, this place is too short to list them. If your that concerned ,stay near the front of the sixth car, which is the center of the train, the conductor is in this car. Or in the very first car if you want to see the ride in, the driver of the train is there also. Stay near crowds for added protection (safety in numbers)

Another alternative that will cost a little more but definitely safer would be to take the Long Island Rail Road from Jamaica to Penn Station and take subway from there. You will have to transfer once but route should have a lot of people on it and is better than taking the Subway direct from Jamaica. See map at http://www.lirr.org/nyct/maps/submap.htm

I lived in New York for 4 years, and never had a problem on the subway. However, I would take Marie's suggestion about the bus if you could.

Oh, you'll be fine. Just don't do anything stupid. Walk with your head up, instead of looking at the sidewalk. Be alert. The subways are actually not that bad in New York, but just to err on the side of caution, you should think about taking a cab. Way more expensive, but definitely safer.

I live outside of NY but unless you are dressed really slutty, are very young or are very stupid you should have no problems!
