This photograph by the controversial artist seems to me to depict animal cruelty to the extreme. Is this just a manipulated Photo? If not, was the dog already dead? What is your opinion regarding this photo as a "work of art."

It's a coyote, and it was dead before Serrano got it. This picture (like most of his work) simply strikes me as a juvenile attempt to shock. A schoolboy who thinks he's clever, with a dirty mind and a camera.

According to the Wikipedia, Serrano's work is "produced by conventional photographic techniques" - no digital manipulation.
This "shock art", similar to "shock jocks" on the radio or "shock rock" shows. It's only good to people stupid enough to be amused by it, and there is no lasting value. In 100 years, no one will remember it.

I assume the dog was already dead, otherwise he'd be risking animal cruelty arrest, and there is no mention of it.
