The Negres, a father and son idea family, have created an air car. ..runs on compressed air. If the link doesn't work with your normal search engine, then try another one. Air and electricity (battery operated computer cars) are the "fuels" of the future. Just because GM dropped their Calif. experiment with the electric car, recalling all of them and destroying them, duh.....doesn't mean the rest of the world followed that stupidity. http://autos.yahoo.com/green_center-article_42/ Toyota being just one automotive leader in the industry.

The next few years should be very interesting for electric cars. There is lots of new battery technology in the works, like ultracapacitors, which improve on batteries (instant recharge time, never wear out.) Here's another air car project:

Here are some of the other electric car projects being worked on now:
*
The Tesla electric sports car:

*
The Tesla accelerates faster than a Ferrari, and gets 250 miles per charge. The batteries last at least 100,000 miles. But the Tesla is very expensive. Here's a cheaper one:

*
Here's one from Mitsubishi that may be ready next year - this car can charge in only 20 minutes:

Most of these cars won't be ready until next year, at the earliest. And, as you point out, there may be more political interference. The good news is that Li-Ion battery technology patents are all held in Asia, away from the easy grasp of big oil. Electric cars are already catching on in China, and prices there are falling fast. Look at these Chinese electrics - these are priced in american dollars (he's looking for distributors.) Prices start at $6500:

What if you want to buy today? The most economical electric car is a conversion. Conversions look like average cars, and accelerate and handle normally. Cars like this can be had for as little as $5000. More details:
