DO NOT buy a plasma tv. The life span of a plasma is 10 years. Each year depending on use the plasma picture gets darker. After 5 years the picture will be half as bright as when you purchased it. This is the reason why they are cheaper. LCDs have a bulb in them that you replace every few years. That keeps the picture nice and bright. There is a reason they are cheaper, its because they wear out alot faster. BUY an LCD!!!

Plasma vs LCD
The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:
1. Larger screen size availability.
2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.
3. Better color accuracy and saturation.
4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).
The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:
1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.
2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.
3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.
4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years) than LCD. This can vary according to other environmental and use factors.
LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:
1. No burn-in of static images.
2. Cooler running temperature.
3. No high altitude use issues.
4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.
5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can vary according other environmental and use factors.
DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:
1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.
2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts).
3. Not as available in large screen sizes above 37-inches
4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.
5. LCD televisions are typically more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions, especially when comparing EDTV Plasmas to HDTV-LCD Televisions.

My Plasma TVs had a much shorter life span than the LCD type TVs I recently purchased. If you go with a plasma buy the extended warranty, which includes maintenance and replacement. With extended usage, plasma TVs are prone to burn out and if the manufacturer's warranty has lapsed you're in for a hefty repair bill. However, they offer a superb picture. In either case, if you're shelling out major bucks---look into insurance/ extended warranties for either type. I learned this lesson the hard way. But here's a useful link for you.

I just need to chime in with one point that no one seemed to mention. WEIGHT!!!
I own a 40" Samsung LCD that is wall mounted on a cantilever arm and I had no problem mounting it on the wall with only my wife to help me.
Contrast that with me trying to help my best friend mount his 42" Plasma on a stationary wall mount. We had to get 2 more guys to help us because the thing was so heavy and fragile (i.e. the giant piece of glass attached to the front).
So for not only longevity, better picture quality, and all the other great things about LCDs, add easier mounting and you've got yourself a winner.

go LCD!!! plasmas have been known to burn out due to the tv getting its screen projection from gasses.. the gas will burn out and your tv will no longer be any good! it doesnt matter if someone tells you the plasma is a 1st/ 2nd/ 3rd generation tv.. plasmas are heavier and have less color... LCD's are a gel type just like your flat screen computer... very light, good color, last forever... get the LCD!!!

A point rarely mentioned. Plasma displays are highly reflective so you will see any lamps, etc. in the room reflected on your screen.
