Blanching means
to scald or parboil in water or steam in order to remove the skin from, whiten, or stop enzymatic action in (as food for freezing)

Here's a method in blanching almonds:

Place almonds in a microwaveable container and add enough boiling water to cover the almonds. Microwave on full power for 30 seconds. Drain and rub off the almond skins.

Blanched almonds are almonds that have had the brown skin removed.

To make them: Bring a pan of water to a boil. Turn off heat. Put almonds into the pan of hot water for several minutes and then pour the water out. The almond skins will be soft and loose, and you can then squish the almonds with your fingers to pop the white nut meat out.
