If you are still a schoolgoing boy/girl, here is the answer.
It is for the benefit of the driver who is driving a vehicle ahead of the ambulence to read in his rare view mirror easily to give side to that vehicle. The mirror image caption will look plain in the rare view mirror of the driver.
( Don't be nervous due to my first few lines, in fact I was also not knowing this for quite a long number of years)
