I pity on you, such a common question you are putting . What is your age?

If you are still a schoolgoing boy/girl, here is the answer.

It is for the benefit of the driver who is driving a vehicle ahead of the ambulence to read in his rare view mirror easily to give side to that vehicle. The mirror image caption will look plain in the rare view mirror of the driver.

( Don't be nervous due to my first few lines, in fact I was also not knowing this for quite a long number of years)

People can comprehend the word more quickly and easily if it's seen correctly instead of being flipped over.

So in emergency, when a driver sees the word "ambulance" in the rear view mirror, he'll see it correctly and so comprehend the word quicker, and give way to the ambulance quicker.
