I think a "soulmate" can be anyone in your life who challenges you to learn and grow, to be your true self, and there's definitely not only one in a lifetime... I don't like the word 'soulmate' so much, I prefer to call it 'kindred spirits' and they can come in many forms, family, friend, colleague, lover. It is NOT someone who "makes you whole" because you have to be whole on your own before you can have a truly healthy relationship. I've had 2 relationships that I would call a 'soulmate' in the sense that we connected on all levels, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. I started seeing someone recently who may be my 3rd, we seem to click way more easily than I do with most people and we are on a very similar path in life. :)

I love my wife, however, soul mate? that is a construct of poets and greeting card makers. Anyone who has been in a committed relationship for over 20 years knows love is about caring and compromise, not some stupid romance novelists idea of what love is. Romeo and Juliet were soul mates, by poetic standards, but they were uncompromising and stubborn, not to say idiotic, and they both ended up dead because of it. Death is not romantic. It is tragic.
As for double or half, the answer is neither. People you love are their own person. If you are lucky, like I am, then that person compliments your attributes and you become more than you would alone. if not, the union is terrible for everyone involved.

I met people that I thought were soul mates. Boy, was I wrong! I'm sorry, if you believe in soul mates, then that's great. I personally think it is just another Hollywood invention.
