I don't mean as in 'swishy tail means she's annoyed', 'ears back means she's frightened', I mean as in how do I tell that she really loves me. How do I get her to some to me for cuddles when i call her etc.

Here are some things:
cat thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me...I must be a god.

Also:
1. I could have sworn I heard the can opener.
2. Is there something I'm not getting when humans make noise with their mouths?
3. Why doesn't the government do something about dogs?
4. I wonder if Morris really liked 9-Lives, or did he have ULTERIOR motives?
5. Hmmm ... If dogs serve humans, and humans serve cats, why can't we cats ever get these STUPID dogs to do anything for us?
6. This looks like a good spot for a nap.
7. Hey -- no kidding, I'm sure that's the can opener.
8. Would humans have built a vast and complex civilization of their own if we cats hadn't given them a reason to invent sofas and can openers in the first place?
9. If there's a God, how can He allow neutering?
10. If that really was the can opener, I'll play finicky just to let THEM know who's boss!

The best thing to do is to try and train the cat, and don't pick her up as much. Wait for her to come to you and reward her with a treat or something when you know she has done well. Also (this sounds crazy) talk to your cat in high pitched voices. This makes them think that they are good cats and makes them feel more like a member of the family. If this does not work than try bonding with the cat and play with her a couple of times a week, with a toy or something. Also practise grooming the pet and feeding the pet, and slowly you will bond.

Hope this helps :)

Twinkle:
Let me tell you how I, a cat lover, respecter, and servant handle the situation. And really, that's all you're gonna get is a lot of opinion. So I'll share mine with you. The first thing you must do is realize your cat is independent. The cat doesn't need you. She's condescending to come into your house, eat the food you give her and drink whatever you put down for her. Cats are a superiour race of thinking, imagining and planning creatures. Cats are highly intelligent persons, and given the opportunity, will prove their intelligence time and again. One thing a cat will do AFTER it realizes the house its living in is "home," the cat will seek out a human being with whom to communicate. My cats have always done their communing with me instead of anyone else living in my home. I give them the space to commune. I invite them to commune. I never try to force my cat(s) to do anything. They just get tweeked at me and walk away if I try. But my "door" is always open if my cat wants affection from me. And the cat knows this. Some cats don't want to be picked up and held. They want to be respected for who they are and for what they are capable. Cats are not needy people. They don't have the same kind of needs that dogs do. Cats are more aloof--indifferent--than dogs or even people. They can take humans or leave them, as long as the food and drink are available. If it's not, they go some place else. Cats will communicate if given the chance. But you can't force it or make it happen. My cats have locked eyes with me for as long as 5 or 6 minutes; neither of us blinked. During the stare-down, the cat was transmitting a message to me, telepathically, into my brain. I didn't need to translate or try to figure out what he was saying, I just relax and the message forms in my mind. I had a doberman who did the same thing. Cats don't waste words. Their messages are succinct and to the point. But they will tell you what they want you to know.
I wish you the best with your cat,

zeke

If your cat makes eye contact with you...follows you into the kitchen or comes into any room that you are in, would say she likes you.....if your cat loves you she will come when you call her, unless you have trained her not to do certain things in certain rooms. My cat never jumps to me unless I call him except at night when I lay down he jumps up and lays right next to me. Cats are naturally independent so you need to continuously say something to your cat or give a pat or pick her up etc.....she will miss this if you stop...but dont ignore her....she will come to you without you calling her.......re edit.... by the way cats are "capable "of a wide range of thoughts and feelings.....when I get mad the cat goes wild and literally scratches through the house while running stops and comes back and does it repeatedly. If I cry the cat jumps into my lap and meows while looking at me...If I get hurt or have pain the cat gets very upset and howls really loud...same with my kids if they get a bump or scrape.....I am pregnant and my cat is next to me more than usual like within a couple of feet all the time. .........Maybe your cat knows what you are feeling and thinking . If your cat was truly unhappy with you she wouldnt eat or stay quiet.

Kitty love is normally expressed by purrs and kneading. So, if the cat jumps into your lap, rubs againts you, purrs, and spreads her toes against your body, that is Feline for "I love you!"

That said, many cats are too timid to express themselves so effusively. You can encourage your cat by being patient and providing positive re-inforcement for coming to you and accepting attention from you.

Say your cat's name when you feed her, as you put her food dish down. This way, she knows her name means something good. Then use it when you offer her a treat. Then say it before you look for her to give her a treat. Pet her between treats, if she allows it, or during meals.

With tiny increments and patient repetition, your cat will figure it out. They are very smart!

Haven't you heard the phrase "Dogs have a master but cats have staff" ? She will sit on you when she chooses to, not when you want her to. That's the way it is! Don't you just love 'em though!

Another phrase which helps understand the feline mentality is "Millions of years ago cats were worshipped as Gods and they have never forgotten this" !!!!!

If you're cat is awake and meowing it usually means they want something from you - fussing, feeding, fresh water, playing with. However if you're cat is purring it means they have all they need and are happy. Cats like humans, are each individual, so get to know you're cat and you will pick up on what they want.

Don't worry she will train you.

Look gently into her eyes and slowly blink both eyes once.
She will return your confirmation of friendship.
Always speak to her in a soft tone.
When close, rub your forehead on hers, but gently.
From this movement make whispering noises in her ear that are so soft you can hardly hear them.

My two follow me each year when I deliver the road's Christmas cards.
