If global warming is such a problem why do we not get more government incentives and encouragement to change our ways?

I think people have known for years diesel in our cars produces less CO2 than petrol. Diesel also used to be very much cheaper.
I along with others moved to diesel and paid more for a diesel car, so that I might do my bit. I was compensated for the extra cost of the diesel car, and the inferior comfort and performance of the diesel car by cheaper fuel costs, on top of more miles to the gallon.

However, slowly diesel fuel increased until now it is significantly more expensive. Diesel cars have improved, but they are still not as good a drive as petrol cars in my opinion. I think they still may cost more. People are going to catch on and start moving back to petrol. What sense does that make?

New Labour set you up!

Diesel is cheaper than in petrol in Spain for the reasons you outline; so why not here?

This was one of the first green taxes and will not be the last. Someone has to pay for free university fees and free care for the elderly in Scotland. Thank you!

Even with higher diesel prices you'll still get more miles to the pound than the same size petrol engine.

The problem with diesel is whilst it was considered better than leaded petrol, it produces more particulates (soot) then unleaded petrol. This can cause breathing problems.

What we need is a sustainable source of bio-diesel have and the requirement to fit particulate filters to diesels.

Doesn't make any sense to me. They will probably try to convince you that diesel is still cheaper because of more miles to the gallon but if prices keep going up, that can't last long.

I totally agree, I switched to a diesel fiesta about 3 weeks ago and think exactly the same as you there. It seems because we fill up less often we pay more for it when we do.
