I'm making stuffing homemade, and I know I gotta dry my bread out, but I was wondering would croutons work since they're dried up bread as well? I got all my ingredients.. I just wanted to know if anyone has tried doing that.

Oh, and the croutons I have I think are ranch flavored.... I think ranch flavored with chicken broth would be good.

Ranch croutons should be okay but I would go with plain croutons just to be on the safe side. This way, you can control the flavors in your stuffing. Too many ingredients can ruin any meal, especially stuffing, which I LOVE. Good luck. I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Yes, I've done this before. I used a bag of garlic croutons to make a stuffing for a stuffed porkchop. Just be aware the stuffing will have whatever flavor the croutons have.

Around the holidays, you can buy bags of plain croutons for this as well. I've seen them from Pepperidge Farms.

I make two kinds of stuffing, corn bread and french bread. I do not like the stuffing cubes, they are too uniform, and end up tasting like a box of Stove Top. To make fresh bread cube stuffing, get a loaf or two of day old French or Italian bread, cut into 1 inch cubes, put in a 350 degree oven on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes until dried out. Remove, and you have the base for an excellent stuffing. I would recommend cooking it the day of, otherwise, stuffing can get soggy.

Yes, just watch the moisture content. Croutons are so dry that they'll suck up a lot of stock, so you might need extra broth.

You can do it (I have) but it doesn't taste very good and it will remind your guests of the stuffing from a Swanson's TV dinner. You will also need A LOT of liquid. Rather than drying your bread, just lightly toast it. Your stuffing will taste and look better that way.

yes you can, sounds good. Because the croutons are seasoned, and you prob wont have to use to much bread.
Hope it comes out ok, good luck.

You can buy the bags of already dried bread cubes, which are basically croutons.

I have, and some of the commercially boxed stuffing mixes have them. You just have to make sure the mixture is wet enough before you stuff the bird.

Yes that would be fine. Just watch your seasonings, you don't want too many different seasons in there, such as mixing Italian and Poultry seasonings.
