Optical signals have been used for years, including flashing lights, reflections from mirrors, flag displays and even smoke signals. There are many ways that optical signals are used today, and you can even consider the flags that are flown on ships on the ocean to be optical signals of a sort.

Yes,, the light from this computer screen reached my eyes, my brain interpreted the data and I received and partially understood your optical signal.
