Unless you've dropped it, or used the wrong charger it is unlikely to have broken.
Get out the manual - if you don't have one search for one on google using your model and serial number.
My guess is that you have got it set to a certain thing, like record for example and are trying to play.
In the manual you will find troubleshooting, telling you the problems and how to fix them. If you still don't know, read the whole manual. After that take it back to the shop.
Next time giving more info could help - like the model you have. Then someone might have had a similar problem, and could fix it for you.
As for the best one, too early to tell.
New and better ones coming out everyday.

I think you need, first, to plug your mp3 player into a USB socket on your computer and clear all data from it. Click on START, then My Computer. Click on the alphabet letter which corresponds to your mp3 player (it will probably show up on screen as a "Portable Drive) with a letter such as "G","J" or "H", etc. Right click on the Portable Drive, select Explore from the drop down menu and you will see what data is on your mp3 player. If there are files on it, they should play back O.K. through your ear buds. If the files are corrupted, then Right click on the Portable Drive again and select Delete. Left click on Delete to remove all the files. Now you have to download mp3 files from the internet or "rip" the songs from a CD. After suitable mp3 files are on your hard drive, you can copy them to your mp3 player. The whole process is easier than it sounds. a AAA cell should last 5 hours or more for playback, and most players show a battery level or have an LED which starts blinking red for a low battery..

i think it sounds like you're panicking and need to come up for air or stop for a breath but certainly take a deep breath or you'll go blue then you cant tell us what is the matter with your mp3 player even though by then it will be the least of your problems because your face will have turned blue and you will start to suffocate because youre not breathing but if you had another way of breathing and that wasnt an issue is might be worth taking your mp3 player into a shop and getting an expert to look at it for you but you should probably learn to speak slowly first otherwise you might panic him and that wouldn't do

connect mp3 player to pc with usb lead
find it in 'my computer' (yours, not mine!)
right click the icon and choose 'format'
select FAT and ignore Quick format
then rip all your favourite cd's in windws media player..
when done open the file they are in......
and 'edit/select all/ move or copy to mp3 player...
dont forget to use limewire too, and scan everything you download with antivirus before putting on mp3 player... g/luck x
(if you get stuck, email me)
and buy a iPod..... . (better)
