With most online free credit reports, you will always need a credit card. For the first 30 days, it's a trial so you do not get charged. But, you still need a credit card.
A good site would be http://www.annualcreditreport.com where you can get all 3 credit reports once per year for free. You do not need a credit card, I believe. They also have a phone number and mailing address.
Another way to obtain a credit report is to "snail mail" or fax the credit bureaus. If you have been rejected for anything, you can take a copy of that and request a free credit report from all 3 bureaus. I believe you are also entitled to 1 free report a year.
Here's links to address for Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion:

https://www.econsumer.equifax.com/consumer/sitepage.ehtml?forward=contact_us

Never give your credit card number for that. It is the law now in the US to protect against fraud that you recieve a free credit report from the credit agency of your choice once a year. Transunion, equafax, or experian, ( probably spelled wrong because not sure how it is pronounced). All you have to do is call one of them, and they will send it t you. Try Transunion.

or:

or:

each require a credit card, but will not charge you during the trial period - except for the $1.00 charge on the second link. the last link looks totally free... but I didn't research the entire website... sometimes those charges are hidden.
