The other night I was awoken by my 3 budgies (2 male and 1 female) squawking. I went downstairs and found the female on the bottom of the cage unable to fly back up to the perches. The cage is pretty big, there is enough room for all three.

I took the female and put her in the spare cage and this is the 3rd day that she is in it now. She seems happy enough, just her wings have quite a few feathers missing, I think the other 2 were bullying her. At the moment she still can't fly, but she climbs all over your clothes and perches on your head. There is no blood on either of her wings.

I was wondering when, or if, will she be able to fly again. And when would you put her back in the big cage, or would you leave her by herself? I am making a fuss of her, chatting to her a lot and stroking her.

Thanks,

She is in her own cage

The wing is definately not broken.

They had been together for the past 2 years, they were chicks together. Just thought it was a bit strange for it to happen after 2 years. Think I'll keep her by herself. Thanks

That is totally normal. All feathers fall out just like hair. It may have fallen out from bending it or the budgie may just be moulting. It needs no special attention and should start growing back very soon. If other wing feathers start falling out, make sure you observe the bird carefully to make sure they are not pulling their own feathers out. If they are it could be psychological and needs to go to the vet. Well done on being such a great owner and caring about your pets

She should be okay. She may have sprained her wing and that's why she's not flying. The feathers should grow back in a few weeks and she'll be back to her old self.

Regarding the mix of two males and a female, you might want to get another female to help prevent arguments. It's not necessary (at least in my experience) but it does help keep down arguments ^.^ . It sounds like your guys are thoroughly spoiled!

How long have they been together? If it is a time to think about mating situation, I vote to keep her by herself and baby her. You could try adding a bowl of moulting treat to supplement her diet and encourage feather regrowth. I don't think one female to 2 males is a fair situation to put her in. Especially if "she isn't in the mood" if you get the point. I think male budgies can be very territorial and could pick on her until she is bald or dead. I have two boys in a huge cage, 4x3x6 and it warms my heart to see them fly. I think it is cruel to put a bird in a cage too small for them to even stretch their wings. Hope your little girl feels better soon. sue.

It sounds as though she'd just lost a few flight feathers, these will grow back in time. Spray her with a mist of tepid water to help keep her feathers in top condition and mite free (they love this) it's what she would get in the wild. The flight feathers missing just mean that for a while she will swoop rather than get good lift-off.

you should not have 2 males with one female in any case. You need proper pairs. She may have got a wing caught in the bars.
You say that the cage is big enough for 3 but don't mention the size. In my experience what people deem big enough , never is in reality.
I have had alexandrines arrive here in rescue in a cage I would hesitate to keep a cockatiel in, and learn that the owners think it plenty big enough. Keep her seperate from the males permanently.

i would be wary of introducing another female i think your hen could attack the outsider after living together with her mates and whats wrong with two boys and one girl living in harmony, nothing.
the flight feathers are a mystery , this month and september are the moulting months and countless feathers will be dropped and replaced . on occasions a major flight(wing) will moult and be slow to grow back before another one falls out thus affecting the birds power to fly. do not be concerned it is nature.take care and need help i'm your man.

The other birds probably ganged up on her. The feathers will grow back. If you think the wing is broken, I would have her checked out at the vet's. I would let her have her own "house." Good luck

this could be down to stress, stress in birds makes them lose there feathers so it would be best to kep her on her own and try adding some enviromental enrichment into the cage like hanging wooden men, twigs & sticks and hiding fruit or treat and see if this cheers up your bird
