God did not create the sun on the third day. Verse 1: In the beginning, God created the heavens (all celestial bodies, including sun) and the earth. Beginning with verse 2, the account deals with the PREPARATION of earth for habitation and then the creation of life.
Genesis 1:16 (dealing with the third day) does not use the Hebrew word for create (bara), instead, the Hebrew word for "make" is used. It does not mean create as in to bring into existence. This word - asah - described God as "making" the celestial bodies occupy a new relationship toward the surface of earth.
It is reasonable to believe all the creative "days" were the same in length. They must have been thousands and thousands of years long.

Read the Bible.
On the first day, God created Light and Darkness...
Genesis 1:5
..."And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day."
You realize that before God created night(darkness) and day(light) that there was no time? God created time when he created the changing of night to day.

Questions of historical accuracy are inappropriate to the myths of the first part of Genesis (Creation stories through the Flood).
This part of scripture is not intended to give a factual account of the source of creation but to pass on to generations Israel's wisdom gained from being in convenant with God. In other words, it's about God and what God IS doing, not about the universe and what God did. The question to ask is What does this account of creation tell me about God?

How long is a day when the solar system was being formed?
If you measure a day as the time it takes for the earth to rotate once, how do you know it didnt take several million years for the same event to take place?
The point is, no one really knows exactly how long a day was during creation. I don't think one is being fair to God to restrict Him to exactly 24 hours as being "a day".

One minute is how long it would take for a bird every hundred thousand of our years to go to the top of a mountain and sharpen its beak and fly back down, and when the mountain is worn down flat, that is one minute,so figure that by how many minutes is in a Day, and you will have the exact amount of time is in a day,In God years.give or take a half million years or so.

well, maybe he just noticed that the first 2 things had taken him 24hrs to do, so he thought, if i make the earth spin once every 24 hours, it'll be a more catchy story.
rather than,
on the first week, two days, seventeen hours four minutes 16.333 seconds, god created...
