I have been watching Criss Angel's Mindfreak alot and had the urge to go to thee internet to figure out how he does his magic. I am finding references to a "gimmick" as a piece of wearable equipment for levitation, but no explanation of how it works, without paying for a costly manual. can anyone briefly explain what a "gimmick" is, and how it works?

A "gimmick" in magician's parlance is any device that allows them to perform an illusion. Usually indicates the device is small, but not always.

I don't know Chriss Angel's gimmick, but a traditional stage levitation the gimmick would be a bed with a steel rod extending back through the curtain to a base strong enough to support the levitatee's weight (and maybe raise and lower), with a hairpin bend in the rod to allow a ring to be passed over the levitatee and back again.

It is possible to levitate without any sort of gimmickry. I have done it. Ever remember the sensation of waking up floating above your bed and falling back into bed when you where a little kid? Most people forget because when children try to explain it to their parents they just their kids were dreaming. That's the basis of levitation. Sometimes when we sleep we get so relaxed that we float. It is a matter of will power and self mastery.
You don't need the gimmick but I am sure there are lots of people who will take your money for a such a thing.
