The arabic is needed in order to interpret it right.

The arabic says: Ma nansakhu min ayatin aw nunsiha na'ti be khayrun minha aw mithluha alam ta'lam an Allaha ala kulli shaiun kadeer.

I know arabic as a native speaker and I shall explain the verse to u in literal meaning:

the verse uses the word 'nansakhu' which is derived from 'naskh' and the word 'nunsiha' which is derived from 'nisy'.

naskh means abrogation as it is shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naskh_(exegesis)
therefore 'nansakhu' means: that which We abrogate.

and nisy means:forgetting
therefore 'nunsiha' means: that which We make people forget.

In the light of the facts I have mentioned above, the literal translation of the verse would be:

When we abrogate a verse or make people forget it, We bring that which is better than it, or the same as it. dont you know? that God is capable of all things.

Let me try to explain it in my way.

We can understand this with "Sun" example. One who knows "Sunshine" has some knowledge of the "Sun".
One who knows the "sun globe" has better understanding of "Sun" than one who just knows about "Sunshine"; and one who knows what is present inside the "Sun Planet", is still better.

In this way, Allah , or God, can be explained in a much deeper way, by prophets. It depends on the time, place & circumustances, and the condition & culture of the people.
It is not that "one prophet knows less" or "another prophet knows more"; generally the prophets explain the existence and devotion to God, depending upon people.

The highest stage of human life is to attain love of God, Allah, just like Ph.D. doctorate in education. But those who have not yet passed the primary, secondary schools & graduation cannot be taught the higher principles of love of God. So prophets consider the standard of people and teach them as they understand. In this way, they pave the path of progress.

It also means that one should try to be enthusiastic, and learn & practice the teaching to actually pass the primary or secondary schools and go to graduation. Allah or God, will actually help such sincere people who strive to follow the path of prophets.

In Muslim world there are many books available today in different languages of the ORIGINAL INTERPRETATION of the HOLY QURAN by the prophet of GOD about 1400 years ago that is the only interpretation that has to be follow to be the true follower of the prophet as commanded by GOD and the ONLY WAY to SUCCESS that is both in this WORLD and ETERNAL PARADISE.

One may suppose that the intent is that an earlier revelation may be supplanted by a later one that is better in some way. But the whole thing is a fabrication, and time spent pondering it is time wasted. (Presumably the letters identify the particular translation; I suppose that PK is Pickthall and YU is Yusuf Ali, but I don't recognize the others.)

this verse 2:106 is hard to translate. but i will try to explain to you.

in the Quran there is something called "Nasekh" and "Mansookh". for example, Arabs were very addicted to alcoholic, and it's no way that they can stop drinking at one time, so Islam solved the problem by first using Nasekh, and then Mansookh:

1. (Nasekh). believers don't come to the prayers while you are drunk!
[43] O you who believe! Approach not As-Salât (the prayer) when you are in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter....."
Quran 4:43

so at first, this verse was an idication that they can't drink during prayers. so people figure out that they can drink at night. since we pray 5 times a day, people figure out that they can only drink during certain time, at night for example.

2. (Mansookh). then later on, God has put his command down "Mansookh" that to intoxicants all kinds of alcoholic except in the time of "you have to" or emergency.

[90] O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), .......... "
Quran 5:120
so even though God has changed the command, it all goes in one direction. you can't come to prayers while drunk (but God didn't say you can drink either, but people figure out that's what it means, that's a mercy from God to help believers with their faith)

and Naseekh and mansookh also happend again in Quran 2:284 & 2:286
