The Plank
on your stomach place you elbows on floor and hands infront of you forming a triangle - lift your hips up off the floor so you are on your toes and elbows - keep the back straight and don't lift the hips too high - remember to breath and don't hold you breath - suck your belly buttom up into the spine - hold this position for a count of 10 and lower - go back up and hold for 15 and lower - continue adding 5 counts until you get to 30
Side Plank (for love handles)
on your side prop yourself up onto your elbow - keep elbow in line with the shoulder and hips stacked - place top leg infront a little bit for stability - top hand can be on your chest or by your ear - exhale as you lift the hips up off the floor and hold - now in this position exhale as you twist forward bring you top elbow towards the floor and back up - do 15 reps before lowering the body and switch sides

Remember that there are some areas that we all tend to have more problems with and that's mostly due to genetics. If our parents carried spare weight there we are likely too. Dieting is important to lose excess weight. We often think exercise in one area will lose that weight there but it will tend to tone the muscles under the fat. It will help but not be the cure all without some dieting.
You can use lighter weights and do side bends.
You can hold a ball over your head or just your hands and do side bends as well.
Instead of traditional crunches you can twist coming up on them (elbow to knee)
Raise yourself slightly like doing a crunch on the floor ( it's like doing a side bend while in a crunch position). You bring your hand towards your foot. They are stretched out on the side.

I'm not sure I get your question. Love handles are fat. You can't work fat. You can burn it, though. Just keep your daily calorie intake under 2000 and exercise 30 minutes a day. There are always crunches for your abs. But they will do nothing for love handles unless you do enough of them to burn significant calories which would require about 4 hours a day.

The plank holds like someone said. They are GREAT!
Also, do the plank holds on an exercise ball.
Yoga will stretch your abs and exercise the muscles you never knew you had!

weighted twists...leg raises(to the side/front/back...will work different sections of your midsection)...reverse crunch...side crunch....back extensions...deadlifts
all those work your midsection...you're not going to see results though without watching your diet...and doing cardio when it comes to losing weight....you can do all the sit ups or whatever you want you WONT turn the fat into muscle(same idea as turning apples into oranges...wont happen cause their different things) as its impossible...you'll just build muscle under the fat
