I absolutly share your feelings about this. I am french, but I refuse to speak french when in french speaking communities on principle. It's amazing how rude ppl can be when they think you do not understand what they are saying.

I live in Montreal and this is not the way things are going at all. It may be true of smaller cities, but in Montreal many people can go through their whole life not having to speak French, which actually isn't much better.

I think if you're visiting then it's okay not to speak the local language, However, if I would move to Spain to live there, I would really try to learn the language instead of expecting everybody to understand me because I speak English.

In Canada, people might be a little mroe edgy on this issue, maybe because the country calls itself bilingual when in most cases that it not true.

It's the opposite for me(I am a French). I am living in east Ontario and we are 80% french living on the border of the Quebec. The 20% Anglophone don't won't to speak a word in french. I don't think it's a crime too protect or language. Don't hate the French for that in Canada!!!!!

Formerly from New Hampshire, and I know what you're talking about: people from Quebec would come into the state and speak only French to us! Still, I think it is important for us to learn their language...and them to learn our's.

Try living in Quebec Canada. it's worse. I wish we would separate and then let them see how they can get along on their own. They waste more money on their language issues that should be spent in health care and education.
