I was going to come out with a brilliantly funny answer to this, but I read everyone else's and I totally lost my train of thought.
Just a quick question to those of you above, why exactly should we respect the elderly anymore than anyone else? What have they done to earn that respect? I'm sure that a few octogenarians deserve respect for great deeds they have performed in their lifetime, but that's not to say that EVERY old person deserves respect PURELY ON THE BASIS OF BEING OLD.
It's exactly the same with children. Why should they get preferential treatment just because they can't fend for themselves? I grew up in a war zone and I learned REAL FAST how to take care of myself. If you pander to these people, they're just going to become burdens on us. Remember this: human beings are only supposed to live for about forty years. Science and healthcare is screwing around with nature, askewing the balance of the planet. Screw you all, stop regurgitating what other people have told you and think for yourselves you mindless little peons.

I can't believe that any intelligent 19 year old would ask such a question unless it was just a very insensitive attempt to be funny.
I may be a 76 years old man, and probably a lot slower than I used to be and definitely a lot slower than I'd like to be. But I have one huge advantage over you.
I have been 19 years old !
You have not been 76 !
When I was 19, I knew enough to respect and appreciate the elderly. In those days if a slow senior was impeding my efforts, I would have offered them help instead of complaining that they were holding me back.
My only regret is that I won't be around when you are 76 so I can tell you "I told you so!"

Frequently, as you age you start to have problems with balance. Since bones break easier when you get older, and take longer to heal, most elderly people instinctively slow down to compensate for the balance issues, and the concern with injury, on a subconscious level.
Additionally, eyesight becomes an issue for depth perception as well. When you wear bifocals, or trifocals, or even just thick glasses, you can get distortion on where things actually are.
You also have to consider arthritis and other degenerative joint and bone issues. Sometimes just moving hurts, and you learn to move more slowly so it isn't quite as bad.
And...they've earned it. They've raised their children, and in some cases their grandchildren. They've made their contributions to society, taken care of their aging parents, and if the only thing that bothers you is that they aren't moving as fast as you'd like them too...then you need to get a grip.
Someday, you're going to get injured and realize just how painful it can be to move...and, if you live that long, you'll age and discover just why they move so slowly, talk so slowly, and shop so slowly. In the meantime, adjust.

I try to be accomodating to them, but both of them (do NOT forget the old men) are just so slow on everything. It's not the age but the mileage

For the same reason that old men are slow in everything they do. Their bodies are worn out. Eventually we all get old.

Why are young children (boys) inconsiderate of the elderly? Your an example of a child who should be forced into some sorta bootcamp long enough to learn respect.

I guess we are slow because we have earnt the right to be.
After years of raising children and rushing around ,it is so nice to be able to take time to smell the roses.
Have a nice day

I guess being alive for so long entitles them to take their time at the things they do. I just wish they wouldn't drive so slow! Or so erratically!
