She seems to get stuck on a word. It began to show up more after the first week. Other than the irritability when it is wearing off, I have noticed no other side effects.

The stuttering results from a tic that many ADD & ADHD kids have. The dosage on the ritalin might be too high, or it might not be enough. It's hard to tell without knowing her other behaviour.

My son did the extended release version, which is called Concerta. It's the exact same med as Ritilin, only it releases over a period of time, so that your child gets a much smaller dose over the course of a day.

Ask your child's teacher if she has any noticable change in class, good or bad. Talk to the doctor about the stutter.

As for the people telling you to take her off, they've obviously never dealt with a child who actually has ADD or ADHD. While it is true that ADD medication IS a street upper or speed, it does not react that way with people who have add or adhd. It actually calms them down, and helps them focus. Medications shouldn't always be the only resort, but it should never be ignored, either.

My youngest two children are both severely ADHD, though the youngest is only 4, so we're not medicating her at all right now. My son, on the other hand, gets kicked off the school bus, gets in trouble in class, etc, all the time when he hasn't taken his meds. The meds DO help. It can take a while to find the right med (it has taken us a year so far, and we're only a few weeks into this med, so who knows if it will work long term or not), but once you do find the right one, the difference your child shows is just amazing.

Concerta worked great for us for 3 months, then it stopped working, and started hindering. Good luck!

My 11 year old son had the same problem with Ritalin and also Concerta. Call her doctor right away and they will want to take her off of it...this is a side effect. There are other stimulants out there that may work better for her such as Dexedrine, Matadate, Adderall and the like. My son has now been on Adderall for 2 years and it has done wonders for him along with behavioral therapy of course.

This is a unusual side effect that your doctor must know about immediately. It is effecting her brain in an abnormal way. Call MD ASAP.
